Pickleball scoring feels confusing for about a week — then it clicks and never leaves. Here's the whole system in plain English: how points work, how to call the score, and why there are three numbers.

Only the Serving Side Scores

Traditional pickleball uses side-out scoring: you can only score a point when your side is serving. Win a rally on the return and you don't get a point — you earn the right to serve.

Games Are to 11, Win by 2

Standard games are played to 11 points, and you must win by 2. Tournaments sometimes go to 15 or 21, but 11 is the rec-play standard.

How to Call the Score (the Three Numbers)

In doubles, the score is called as three numbers — for example, “4–6–2”:

  1. Your team's score (4)
  2. The other team's score (6)
  3. The server number, 1 or 2 (2)

The server number tells everyone whether you're on the first or second server of your team's turn.

Server 1 and Server 2

When your team is serving, both partners get to serve before the ball goes to the other team — first server 1, then server 2 after a lost rally. When both have lost a rally, it's a “side out” and the other team serves.

The Starting Score: 0–0–2

Every game begins at “0–0–2” — that final 2 means the first serving team only gets one server before the side out, which keeps the opening fair.

What About Rally Scoring?

Some formats — like Major League Pickleball — use rally scoring, where a point is scored on every rally no matter who served. It's faster to follow, but traditional side-out scoring is still standard in most rec and tournament play.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does scoring work in pickleball?

In traditional side-out scoring, only the serving side can score. Games go to 11, win by 2.

Why are there three numbers in the score?

In doubles you call your score, the opponent's score, and the server number (1 or 2) — e.g., 4–6–2.

What does 0–0–2 mean?

It's the starting score. The “2” means the first serving team has only one server before the side out, to keep the first turn fair.

Can you score on the other team's serve?

Not in side-out scoring — you win the serve instead. Rally-scoring formats are the exception.
